Why does a German number cost more than almost anywhere else?

We priced the same code in every country that sells it. For 10 of these 13 popular apps, Germany sits in the dearest tenth of the world. A high price buys you a German number, not a better chance: the rate decides that. Pick an app to print its receipt.

How many numbers does one code take?

Think of a German bottle machine. Every single-use bottle carries a 25-cent deposit that you get back at the machine. A number with no code works the same way: it goes back, and so does its price. At 25%, plan on about four numbers for one code, and pay for one.

How have German numbers done in our own orders since 2024?

This is VSIM’s own log, not today’s market: one-time orders on German numbers from 31 May 2024 to 11 October 2026, tallied the way a German pub keeps count, one stroke on the beer mat for every code. The number in pen is the orders. Turn a mat over to compare with every other country.

Telegram: 4 codes from 171 orders. That is 2% on German numbers against 13% for Telegram across every country. Germany is also one of the dearest Telegram countries, so for Telegram the board above usually points abroad.

Google: second best in the whole log. Among countries with 25 or more Google orders, Canada delivered 36%, Germany 29% and Italy 28%. Rates move, so trust today’s board over this history.

Instagram: 5 of our 18 Instagram codes came from German numbers. 5 from 11 orders, a small sample, against 11% for Instagram everywhere.

What does a German number tell an app before it sends the code?

More than a +1 number does. In Canada or the USA a mobile and a landline share the same area codes. In Germany the prefix gives it away: mobile numbers sit in the (0)15, (0)16 and (0)17 ranges set by the Bundesnetzagentur, landlines start with a town code such as 030 Berlin or 089 Munich, and 0800 or 0900 numbers are services. What the prefix no longer tells is the network: mobile numbers have moved between networks since 1 November 2002.

Type or paste a number, with +49 or a leading 0. It is read in your browser; nothing is sent.

What can a rented German number not open?

A one-code number is yours for up to 20 minutes, then it goes back to the pool. Anything that will text you again, or that belongs to your legal identity, is handled at another counter. Pick a counter to hear why, and what to use instead.

Online banking and TAN codes

German banks send a TAN or a login code to the number on your account, again and again. A rented number is gone after one code, so the next TAN would reach a stranger. Keep your own number on your bank.

How do you get a German number and receive the code?

Line U49, four stations, about two minutes before the wait for the SMS.

  1. App-Platz

    Pick the app and Germany

Open the order page, choose the app, then Germany. The route marked best delivery is chosen for you; switch to the cheapest only if the price matters more than the odds.

  2. Guthaben

    Pay from your balance

Top up from $1 in crypto first. The price comes off your balance when the number is issued and goes back in full if no code arrives.

  3. Rufnummer

Type the number into the app

Choose Germany, +49, in the app’s country list, then type the digits after +49 without the leading 0. Ask the app to send the code by SMS, not by call.

  4. Code

Read the code on your order page

The code appears on the page as soon as the SMS lands. If nothing comes within the timer, at most 20 minutes, the order closes and the price goes back to your balance.

Which mistakes cost people their code?

Four tickets we hand out most, from support chats and our order log. The first is measured across 13,062 one-time orders.

VerwarnungNo. 1

Retrying the same route straight away

After a failed order, buying again on the same route got a code 13% of the time (4,435 retries). Switching to another route for the same country got 21%. Most people retried fast: 5,565 of 8,105 retries came within two minutes.

VerwarnungNo. 2

Typing the leading 0 after +49

Germans write mobile numbers as 0151… at home. After +49 the 0 goes: type 151… exactly as your order page shows it.

What else do people ask about German virtual numbers?

What is a German virtual number for SMS verification?

A real German +49 number you rent on VSIM for one SMS code, with no SIM card, no contract and no ID. You type it into the app, read the code on your order page, and the number is yours for up to 20 minutes. If no code arrives in that time, the full price goes back to your balance.

How much does a German virtual number cost?

It depends on the app. Today German numbers cost from $0.06 to $8.00 across 91 apps, and half of them cost $0.39 or less. For popular apps Germany is one of the dearest countries: the receipt on this page shows where it sits for each one. You pay once; when no code arrives, the price goes back to your balance.

Why is a German number so expensive for WhatsApp and Telegram?

Today a German WhatsApp number costs $8.00, dearer than 118 of 120 countries, against a middle price of $0.69. Telegram costs $5.60 against a middle price of $0.93. Prices follow how many German numbers are available for an app and how hard the app is on them. A high price is not a promise of delivery: check the rate first, and compare a neighbour in the league table.

Which apps work best with a German number?

Right now BIGO LIVE (90%), Signal (82%), Nike (76%), POF (71%), PayPal (65%). 8 of the 33 apps with a measured German rate deliver at least half their codes. The departure board on this page shows every one, refreshed every 15 minutes.

Can I use a German number for WhatsApp?

It is on sale for $8.00, with no measured rate today, so it is a refund-backed attempt at a high price. The best WhatsApp route today is Brazil at 73% for $4.80.

Is a German number good for a Google account?

Check the live rate first. Today 50% of recent Google orders on German numbers got the code. In our own log Germany was the second-best Google country among those with 25 or more orders: 8 codes from 28 orders, 29%, after Canada at 36%. That is history; the board shows today.

Can I use a German number for PayPal?

The sign-up code arrives: 65% of recent PayPal orders on German numbers got it, No. 11 of 28 countries. But PayPal holds money and asks for a code again when you log in from a new device. A one-code number is gone after 20 minutes, so you could lock yourself out of your own funds. Use a number you will keep.

Does the German prefix show that a number is mobile?

Yes. German mobile numbers start with 015, 016 or 017, the ranges the Bundesnetzagentur sets aside for mobile services, while landlines start with a town code such as 030 for Berlin. Since 1 November 2002 a mobile number can move to another network, so the prefix no longer tells you which network it is on. The phone booth on this page reads any German number in your browser.

Which country do I pick in the app?

Pick Germany, +49. Then type the number without the leading 0 and without spaces, exactly as your order page shows it after +49.

Is Germany better than the Netherlands or Poland for SMS codes?

It depends on the app. Counting apps that deliver at least half their codes today: England 33, Poland 23, Netherlands 15, France 11. Germany has 8. The league table on this page puts the eight countries side by side for each app.

What happens if the code never arrives?

The order closes when its timer runs out, at most 20 minutes, and the full price goes back to your balance. You can cancel earlier. A missed code costs you time, not money.

Can I use a German virtual number for online banking?

No. German banks send TANs and login codes to a number in your own name, again and again, and a prepaid SIM in Germany needs an identity check since 1 July 2017. A rented number is gone after one code, so you would lock yourself out. Use your own number for banking.

Can I keep a German number after the code?

No. A one-code number is yours for up to 20 minutes. If you need to receive codes on the same number again, for example to log back in, VSIM sells permanent numbers in the United States.

Can I receive calls on a VSIM German number?

No. VSIM numbers receive SMS codes only. If an app offers to call you with the code, choose the text message option instead.
