What is a virtual number, and how does the code reach you?

A virtual number is a real mobile number on a carrier network that you use through a website instead of a phone. Apps send their SMS verification code (also called an OTP, a one-time password) to that number, and VSIM shows the message to you on screen.

People use one to open or verify an account without giving out their personal number, or to get a number from a country where they do not live.

The app sends a code

Telegram, Google or any other service texts a verification code to the number you entered.

A carrier delivers it

A mobile network carries the SMS to a real number, the same way it reaches any SIM.

You read it on VSIM

The message appears on your screen. No handset and no SIM card needed.

Four terms worth knowing

OTP One-time password. The short code an app texts you to prove a number is yours.

How do you receive an SMS code online?

What 13,062 real orders taught us about delivery

Between 31 May 2024 and 11 October 2026, VSIM issued 13,062 one-code numbers. 3,463 of them received a code. That is 26.5%, or about one order in four. We publish the figure because it should decide how you choose a number.

3 of 20 Telegram orders received a code.

What we changed because of it

  • The finder ranks countries by delivery rate first, price second.
  • An order that gets no SMS is refunded automatically when its timer ends.
  • Low rates are shown, not hidden, so you can skip routes that rarely work.

Apps with at least 100 orders. Telegram and WhatsApp, the two most ordered apps, were also among the hardest to verify.

Same app, same country, two carriers

Cheapest carrier 2% delivered $0.23
Best-delivering carrier 92% delivered $0.32

Live example from the current price list: Uber, USA. Paying $0.09 more moves the delivery rate from 2% to 92%.

Method: counts come from the VSIM order database. An order counts as delivered when at least one SMS reached the number before it expired. Live delivery rates in the finder are reported by our carrier partners per route and refresh every 15 minutes.

How many tries will your sign-ups take?

When is a virtual number the right tool?

A temporary number solves one job well: receiving a verification code once. Be clear about what it cannot do before you rely on it.

Good fit

Opening a second account on a messenger or social app

Run a work and a personal profile side by side.

Good fit

Signing up where your country code is not accepted

Choose a number from a country the app accepts.

Good fit

Keeping your personal number out of marketing lists

Shops and newsletters never get your real number.

Good fit

Testing sign-up flows as a developer or QA tester

Repeat a sign-up flow without a drawer of SIM cards.

Use your own SIM instead

  • Bank, payment and government accounts
  • Your main e-mail or anything that holds money
  • Accounts whose only recovery method is SMS
  • Anything the app or local law forbids

Four myths about virtual numbers

What people assume, next to what the price list and our order log show.

  1. MythA virtual number is a fake number.

    Fact

It is a working mobile number on a carrier network. The only difference is where you read the SMS.

  2. MythThe cheapest number is the best deal.

    Fact

Today a number for Uber in USA costs $0.23 on a carrier that delivers 2% of codes, and $0.32 on one that delivers 92%.

  3. MythThe code always arrives.

    Fact

In our log of 13,062 orders, 26.5% received a code. That is why a failed order is refunded.

  4. MythOnce verified, the number is mine.

    Fact

A one-code number is released after 15 to 20 minutes. Secure the account with a password or an authenticator app.

Questions people ask before buying a virtual number

1Is a virtual number a real phone number?
Basics

Yes. Each one is a working mobile number on a carrier network. The difference is that you read its SMS on the VSIM website instead of on a handset.

Check live prices in the finder
2What happens if the verification code does not arrive?
Delivery

The order closes when its 15-minute timer ends and the full price returns to your balance automatically. You can also cancel earlier yourself, as long as no SMS has arrived.

3Why do some countries have a low delivery rate?
Delivery

Apps block number ranges they have seen misused, and some carriers filter verification traffic. In our own log of 13,062 orders, 26.5% received a code overall, from 67% for WeChat down to 11% for WhatsApp. That is why the finder shows a rate per country.

4How much does a virtual number for SMS verification cost?
Price and payment

A one-code number starts at $0.06 and depends on the app and the country. The current price of every route is in the finder at the top of this page and refreshes every 15 minutes.

5Can I use the same number again later?
Basics

No. A one-code number is released when the order ends and may be issued to someone else. If you need repeat messages, use a permanent number.

6Is it legal to use a virtual number?
Basics

Using a second number is legal in most countries. Whether a specific app allows it is set by that app’s terms of service, and you are responsible for following them and your local law.

7How do I pay, and is there a minimum?
Price and payment

You top up a balance with cryptocurrency through Heleket or NOWPayments. The minimum is $1. Orders are paid from that balance, and refunds return to it.

8Which country should I choose for Telegram or WhatsApp?
Delivery

Open the app in the finder and keep the sort on Best delivery. In our log these two apps had some of the lowest delivery rates, so a route with a measured rate above 40% saves time even when it costs more.

9Do I need to install an app or own a SIM card?
Basics

No. Everything runs in the browser on a phone or a computer. You only need an account and a balance.
